Media Literacy for a Fractured Public Square

About Us

About the Social Institute for Media Literacy

Understanding Media. Rebuilding Democracy.

The Social Institute for Media Literacy (SIML) is a public education and research institute dedicated to helping people understand how media shapes perception, public discourse, and democratic life.

In an era of information abundance, citizens face a constant stream of headlines, narratives, algorithms, platforms, and persuasive messages competing for attention. SIML exists to help people navigate this environment with greater awareness, critical thinking, and civic responsibility.

We believe media literacy is no longer an optional educational skill—it is essential democratic infrastructure.

Our Purpose

SIML was founded to bridge the gap between academic research and public understanding. While scholars have spent decades studying communication, persuasion, ideology, and media systems, much of that knowledge remains inaccessible to the wider public.

Our mission is to translate complex ideas into practical tools that anyone can use to better understand the information environments they inhabit.

We help people move beyond simple questions of truth and falsehood toward deeper questions:

  • How was this message constructed?
  • What assumptions does it rely on?
  • What perspectives are emphasized or omitted?
  • What emotions does it activate?
  • What actions or beliefs does it make seem natural?

By making these questions accessible, we help individuals become more thoughtful readers, viewers, voters, educators, and community members.
